How do you tell the difference between an African Grass Owl and a Barn Owl when you only have wing feathers for identification?

Got the answer from the Transvaal Museum - it was a young Barn Owl. The flight feathers are browner, and not so grey. They are now establishing a Road Kill reporting site, and I'll send you the details when I have them.

They look extremely similar to me, but the little spots on the wings of the African Grass Owl look sharper than the ones on a barn owl. Otherwise'm not sure.

Bubo,

I asked about the feathers, because there wan't enough of anything else, so unfortunately the data on the legs doesn't help.

By comparison with the specimens at the museum it was definitely a young barn owl.
