hi everyone. I live in palm bay, florida and am retired from the post office. I love gardening and have bird feeders. Lots of woodpeckers, blue jays, cardinals, etc. I decided to buy a screech owl house and mounted it about a month ago. Well, they have moved in!! My question is, how long do they take up residence? Do they leave after the babies are grown? I read that the mother stays and incubates and the father hunts and brings food back. I think they are so cute!!! any information will be appreciated.

They will stay until the babies leave and go off on their own. Screech owls tend to return to their nests each year (assuming there is food for them), so you may see them again next year. How lucky you are to be neighbors with screech owls!

There are a lot of owls in Florida. Eastern Screech Owls will often nest close to houses. In other parts of the country, it often takes several years to get an owl to nest in a box. The mother (larger of the two), sits on the eggs most of the time and rears the owlets, while the male does the hunting.

Once they branch, you will see them running around on the ground. They will jump out of the owl house and run around. Once they learn how to climb a tree, then they will roost in the tree for about a week. After a week, they will fly off. Enjoy the experience!
