Hi everyone!

Its about time that I joined the owlpages forum(s). My name is Matt Pretorius, I am a conservation biology student from South Africa and I do research on African Grass-owls on the Gauteng highveld. The main focus of my research over the past two years has been the development of a management strategy for opencast coal mine rehabilitation with the ultimate objective of creating favorable habitat for the re-establishment of breeding populations of Tyto capensis on such sites.

I hope to publish some of my work soon, and will be presenting at least a poster on it at next year's International Ornithological Congress (IOC) in Brazil. Is anyone from the owlpages forum planning to attend this event? I would really like to get in contact with owl researchers/conservationists from around the globe!

I plan to start my Masters thesis on the spatial requirements of the African Grass-Owl in 2010. For this I plan to track the movements of several wild owls occuring in natural habitat in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands. Does anyone in this forum have any owl tracking experience? It appears that good old radio-telemetry will be my only option at this stage, mainly due to the weight issues surrounding satellite and GPS technology. If anyone knows about anything about satelite tracking of owls, and if this has been done before, then PLEASE reply to this post...

Cheers from Africa!!

I would suggest that you visit one of our sister sites: www.globalowlproject.com . Then click on 'Team Bios'. This will list most of the owl researchers from around the world. Not all the Email addresses are valid.

There is a International Owl Conference coming up. It is going to be in South America, but I cannot remember specifically where.

Thanks for the reply!

I'd be interested to know where and when that conference will be, is it the 'World Owl Conference' - like the one held in the Netherlands in 2007...?

I believe the next World Owl Conference will be in Paraguay in 2010. I had the information, but I just cannot find it. I would check with www.worldowlconference.com
