Just got back from a trip to Italy of almost 3 weeks. In the span of a few days, I saw 3 owls. 2 of them within a few minutes of each other. Those two were both on the side of a winding mountain road. It was dark but we saw them well with the car lights. They were the size of screech owls, so I'm not sure if they were owlets or what they call civetta (civette, plural). Both were just sitting at the edge of the road and I have no idea what they were doing.

Then we saw a really big one another night, again by the road. But this time the car seemed to startle it and it flew just above the ground and we could see it's very large wingspan. I believe it was a gufo reale, that looks kind of like a GHO.

I was in the region of Abruzzo towards the east coast. Sure was amazing to see those owls. I'm guessing there are a lot of them there to be able to run into to so many by chance in that brief an arc of time.
