Haven't you all noticed how The Shattering and Coraline have a lot in common? I have.

I mean, there are so much similarities- - -

1. Eglantine and Coraline are not happy with their lives and wished for better worlds.

2. Eglantine and Coraline both explored a bit until they saw their "Other Mothers".

3. Nyra was Eglantine's "Other Mother" and the Belldrum was Coraline's "Other Mother".

4. Both Eglantine and Coraline were sceptical of their "Other Mothers" at first before cheerfully accepting them.

5. Both Nyra and the Belldrum showered their "daughters" with gifts and false love.

6. Both Nyra and the Belldrum grew uglier and uglier as well as meaner over time.

7. The Belldrum can be considered a witch. And, a hagsfiend (what Nyra became at the end) is sort of like a witch (in the avian form).

8. The two "Other Mothers" are both evil (even going as far as to try to kill their "daughters").

9. Both of the "daughters" out-witted and out-fought their "Other Mothers". (Eglantine realizing what Nyra is, flew off with her first egg, and [accidentally] breaking the egg afterwards; Coraline tricked and defeated the Belldrum)

10. Eglantine and Coraline becoming distant towards their friends and family while being obsessed with their dream parents.

11. Eglantine and Coraline were lied to by their dream moms.

12. Eglantine and Coraline both accepting their real worlds over their dream worlds.

13. They both had mentors (Eglantine = Mrs. P; Coraline = the Cat)

14. Both containing the "Be careful what you wish for." messages.

So, what do you all think?

Well, while it is somewhat similar, I'm not really sure that it's that similar. Nyra didn't grow uglier as Eglantine stayed with her longer, and Eglantine was being mind-controlled with flecks whereas Coraline was perfectly free until she realized that the "other" world was sinister. Eglantine never cheerfully accepted Nyra on her own, she was shattered before she began staying with her. Eglantine was only able to escape with Kludd & Nyra's egg because the effects of the shattering were broken, otherwise she would have stayed in her state of believing Nyra was her mother. Mrs. P also didn't really play a big part as Eglantine's guide through the shattering (or not that I remember) Nyra didn't turn into a hagsfiend until she got the spell from the Book of Kreeth way after the whole "shattering" deal, and it was in no way connected to Eglantine. And "be careful what you wish for" isn't the message I got from The Shattering xP

The main difference is that Eglantine wanted her deceased parents back more than anything, so the Pure Ones hypnotized her into believing her wishes came true so that they could control her, with Nyra posing as her mother. Coraline wanted to get away from her parents (this was in the book, I don't know if you've read that or not) so she was tricked into believing there was a world where her parents were better so the Belldrum could gain her trust and trap her there with its other victims.

The only similarity I see is Nyra was playing the "other mother" like in Coraline.

I realized that. But, what I was getting at was that even though Nyra's transformation didn't take place until much, much later and with Eggie not being the cause of it, Nyra was still growing progressively uglier.

(took place right after The Outcast I believe): It was described how Nyra was starting to lose her glow and was becoming more ragged.

(after reading the Legend(s)): Coryn recalled how Nyra was becoming ragged and darker at the edges of her feathers.

(River of Wind): Stryker saw that Nyra had a bit of black on her.

(War of the Ember): Transformed completely, obviously.

Yeah, the Book of Kreeth did play a huge part, but she was already slowly transforming and had a bit of haggish blood in her.

Maybe not completely, but she still embraced Nyra, accepted her stories, did what she said, and she was still a bit accepting of Nyra (wheather the acceptance was big or small). I realized how badly shattered she was, but she was already obsessed with her parents' scrooms and wanted a better world (her life being how it was when she hatched or whatever).

Still, it's the same. Her and Coraline were both able to escape. True, there was no way it was one-hundred percent all-in-common, but they both did the same thing, escaped.

Maybe not in Book 5, but in the early books, Mrs. P was still there for Eggie when she needed it and saw her a friend.

I've already explained this.

Well, Eggie practially was all "Oh, how I wish this were like before! In the Forest of Tyto with Mum, Da, Soren, Mrs. P, and the hollow!" And, I'm quite sure that was what she was wishing for in secret. She even asked herself if she still wanted to live in a world with a dream mum (the dangerous/deadly wish) or a dead mum (the unfortunate reality).

In other words, there was a tiny bit of "be careful what you wish for" message along with, "be careful who your friends are" message.

I haven't read the book (I would love to though. Maybe I'll get the graphic novel soon or Christmas the latest), but I did see the movie (awesome, awesome movie =] ) and that's were I got the inspiration for this thread.

The books are loyal to the movie? =D *delighted*

That's the number one similarity right there. XD

She didn't start to grow uglier until after Kludd died (starting in The Outcast), and I think that it was later stated that it was triggered by some sort of spell or drug that she got from the Northern Kingdom or something. All I remember was that she had something before the Book of Kreeth...or maybe she had something from the Book of Kreeth before she found the rest of it...my mind is going blank, I don't know xP.

Anyway, her transformation was self-induced and had nothing to do with Eglantine (it may have had something to do with losing so much to the Guardians though), whereas the Belldrum transformed as a result of Coraline's refusal to stay.

Wait, Coraline has a graphic novel? 8D

"The movie was loyal to the book", you mean xP

Coraline learns to be careful what she wishes for and to accept the parents that she has. Eglantine learns that her parents really are dead and that she needs to suck it up so her friends can dwell on other problems instead of saving her.

No simialarities. Although Nyra grew uglier, that doesn't count, because Eglantine wasn't the cause of it, and it took place AFTER The Shattering, which this topic is about. So, technically, it's like every story that has a villain growing progressively ugly without reason, which discludes Coraline. It isn't simialer in any way, besides that Nyra lied.
